Tag Heuer History

Founding and Early Innovations

TAG Heuer’s story begins in 1860 in the small Swiss village of St-Imier when Edouard Heuer founded Uhrenmanufaktur Heuer AG, a watchmaking company. In this shop, he produced pocket watches, mostly made in silver.

One of the brand’s most significant innovations came in 1887 with the creation of the oscillating pinion, which allowed the chronograph to start and stop instantly with the use of a push button. This invention remains a fundamental component in chronographs today.

In 1914, as wristwatches became popular, Heuer introduced its first wrist chronograph. This was followed by the 1916 release of the Mikrograph, the world’s first stopwatch capable of measuring 1/100th of a second, marking a new standard in precision.

By 1920, Heuer’s stopwatches were chosen for global events like the Olympics, solidifying the brand’s reputation in sports timing.

In 1948, TAG Heuer introduced the Auto-Graph, a wrist chronograph with a tachymeter scale(measures speed). In 1949, it introduced the Solunar, which tracked tides.

The Mareograph (1950) also called the Heuer Seafarer, was designed for the sailing community and became the first chronograph to feature a tide indicator

In 1962, TAG Heuer made history when astronaut John Glenn wore a Heuer stopwatch during his orbit of Earth, marking the first Swiss timepiece in space.

The legendary Carrera chronograph came out in 1963, getting its name from the Carrera Panamericana road race.

To wrap up TAG Heuer’s long history, the 1960s were pivotal for the brand. In 1969, Heuer, with Breitling and Hamilton, introduced the Calibre 11, the world’s first automatic chronograph. This innovation cemented Heuer’s position as a precision timekeeping and design leader.

Over the decades, TAG Heuer has continued to evolve, blending its legacy of sports timing and technical innovations with modern style, becoming a cornerstone of Swiss luxury watchmaking.

Today, TAG Heuer is a symbol of precision, performance, and elegance, celebrated by watch collectors and motorsport enthusiasts.

How much does a TAG Heuer watch cost?

The cost of TAG Heuer watches depends on the model and complexity of the movement. You can get Entry-level models like the Formula 1 for around $1,600 to $4,500, while other models such as the Carrera or Monaco can range from $3,000 to $8,000+.

Then you have the high-end watches that can easily cost $10,000-$50,000+

TAG Heuer Carrera

The TAG Heuer Carrera which was introduced in 1963, is one of the brand’s most iconic and well-known collections with 57 different variants on the Tag Heuer site.

The Carrera models range in price from $3,500 to over $38,000(Retail)+, offering options from entry-level luxury to high-end, limited editions. With its timeless style, precision engineering, and racing DNA, the Carrera is, in my opinion, the best collection TAG Heuer offers, catering to a wide spectrum of tastes and budgets.

TAG Heuer Monaco

The TAG Heuer Monaco holds a special place in watch history as the first square-shaped chronograph. Launched in 1969, the Monaco was also the first automatic chronograph to feature a water-resistant case.

It gained a legendary status when actor Steve McQueen wore it in the 1971 film Le Mans, further increasing the watch’s and the brand’s association with motorsports. The Monaco’s bold, unconventional design and cinematic heritage make it a must-have for collectors interested in the history of watches.

The TAG Heuer Monaco is one of the brand’s more expensive collections, with prices typically ranging from $9,000 to over $13,000(Retail) and some models have their prices listed only upon request.

TAG Heuer Formula 1

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 collection is directly inspired by the brand’s involvement in the racing hence the name Formula 1. It is an entry-level watch, offering high-performance timepieces at more accessible price points. The Formula 1 watches have vibrant colors, bold designs, and a clean look.

The Formula 1 is the most affordable Tag Heuer model ranging from $1,600 to $5,000(retail).

TAG Heuer Aquaracer

The TAG Heuer Aquaracer is the brand’s premier dive watch, designed for underwater performance and durability. Launched in the early 2000s, it combines rugged functionality with a sleek, sporty design, making it perfect for diving enthusiasts and everyday wear.

With water resistance up to 300 meters, the Aquaracer offers reliability in extreme conditions that you probably won’t find yourself in with a watch but it’s there.

Prices for the Aquaracer range from $2,500 to over $22,000 (retail), which in my opinion is too expensive for a battery watch.
